The importance of having a gastroenterologist near me is that it allows you to undergo doctor visits and procedures close to your home. This makes the usual health care process, like diagnosing GI symptoms, more feasible for the patients.
Nowadays, with the increase in traffic and limited public transportation, having a doctor closer to your home plays a important role. That is why having a gastroenterologist nearby is so important.
During the current COVID-19 we have learned more about telemedicine. This technology allows us to communicate remotely without the need to travel to the doctor. Even though this is very helpful tool in medicine, it produces a limited physician-patient encounter. In the “usual” in person medical visit, both the patient and the doctor can get more information in order to provide the best assessment of the patient’s condition. A simple example is the inability to perform a physical examination while performing a virtual evaluation of the patient.
Many of the elderly population prefer to see a doctor in a “classic” way. In person. They are the ones that will benefit the most on having a gastroenterologist near them.
When I have to refer my patients to other specialists, like a surgeon; The first question that my patient ask is if the doctor is close to my office. We like to go to places closer to our home since it is more convenient.
A common problem we have in a medical practice is the compliance of our patients. If we create “obstacles” by asking the patient to have a test performed at a doctor’s office far away from their home, the patient will likely cancel the appointment or skip the appointment altogether.
A good example of the above is what a patient shared with me recently. I recommended that the patient have a medical infusion that would help with her Ulcerative colitis symptoms. The insurance approved an infusion center that is 20 miles from her home. Because of the distance, the patient asked me to change her prescription back to the previous one that she was injecting at home, even though I explained that the current regimen is not working for her condition.
Having a gastroenterologist near by, or having a service near the patient, is less cumbersome to facilitate providing health services to our patients.
